The ones who stayed

Synopsis:

When her first nephew is born in Barcelona, director Vanessa Batista, a Cuban who settled in Catalonia ten years ago, is inspired to undertake a journey across her native country. In her search for answers, she retraces the steps of Francisco Carulla, a Catalan immigrant who made his first and final journey home in 1927, recording his visit with a 16 mm camera. Following Carulla’s accounts, Batista slowly pieces together the story of Catalan immigration to Cuba, delving into the experiences of the thousands of people who crossed the Atlantic in search of a better life – of those who, for different reasons, never made the trip back to Catalonia. Making her way through a veritable house of mirrors, Batista delves into the question of identity, roots and the consequences of immigration, exploring contemporary Cuba in an intimate and personal journey, where others afford us an opportunity to see ourselves more clearly.
