Director's Statement:
DECADES APART was inspired by the story of a man who refused to harm children because of how much he loved them; but his addiction to pornography is what destroyed him in the end, making him a truly controversial character.

Goal of the Film:
Humanizing a pedophile is no easy task. Every aspect of Robert's character had to be specifically structured to make sure the audience won't reject him as the protagonist. That's why I chose to focus on his emotional attraction to the boy he babysits. Society forgets that pedophiles are human. They feel love and empathy, and are incorrectly assumed to be child molesters. A majority of pedophiles never harm children. They hate what they are, they live in fear, and there's nowhere for them to go. What really saddens me is that Pedophilia develops during puberty. I don't think anyone, especially teenagers, should have to face this illness alone. Avoiding and shunning this disorder will only lead to more children being harmed. If we can see pedophiles as human and give them a place to comfortably seek help, we can prevent children from being harmed.
