Uncle Tianshun: On the Village's Public Space From An Anthropological Perspective

Synopsis:

Uncle Tianshun, the main character in the Film, was 80 years old in 2015. He has never left the farmland and the rural areas and was an ordinary peasant living among the grassroots of the Chinese society. In 2015, we experienced together with him the coming and going of lives in the family.Uncle Tianshun had a elder sister who is my Aunt Tianhua. She passed away in 2015. The traditional funerals in most Chinese villages have been thoroughly modified by cultures of our modern civilization, which make the funerals in Yuan Wang Village a“spiritual communion” for villagers there and an accomodating activity featuring the historical traces of social development. The spring water flowing out of the grandma’s temple is crystal clear. With the governmental aids, the spring water has been diverted to the stoves in villagers’ families. Thus, they could drink the “running water” like people living in cities. We are all descendants of China’s Central Plains, as well as the beloved for Uncle Tianshun. In order to record the ordinary but interesting life of the aging and vigorous Uncle Tianshun, his descendants of the second and the third generation picked up cameras for the first time to observe the unique cultural charm presented by this piece of rural land.
