Information for the Audience:

When we started working on the script, we were interested most about how something unexpected would influence a stable system and slowly erode it. The prospect of life that is not redeemed the way the couple expected. A child that won’t be, although it is growing steadily in Julia’s body. How should you grasp death in the gamete? How can meaning grasp the possibility of birth being the end of life?
Thus Julia stands in front of the grave and it is but the picture that tells the full truth. The mother carrying the child that still lives but soon will be dead and buried in the cold ground. The mother that will continue living instead and is lead by this realization onto the meadow where she will find no answer but an awful vortex of possibilities.

Although we wanted to focus on the life of the parents and the implication this pregnancy has, we thought that there was a strong mythical factor to the film. Not only is the child a malformed foetus but it is also a symbol representing our losing touch with the nature around us.

Imagine the darkest place you can go when you want to run away, when everything is just going wrong. It is a place of gentle peace and retreat you would seek in such moments. But also a reminiscence of the danger, the threat that has brought you to this place. Sternenkind is about the feeling of an expectant mother when she finds out that her child is going to die.
