REED: The Life and Works of Roy Kiyooka

Synopsis:

“REED: The Life and Works of Roy Kiyooka” SYNOPSIS
REED is the story of the extraordinary Japanese-Canadian artist Roy Kiyooka told by his daughter Fumiko.  Fumiko learns Roy was the grandson of a renowned Samurai whose nickname was ‘Reed.’  Michael Ondaatje says Roy “ …was like a reed, receptive to every nuance in you.”
In the Sixties, Roy was a seminal force in the New York School of Painting, and his Hard Edge works earned critical acclaim until he abandoned painting at the peak of his career. He became a poet in the tradition of the wandering monk Basho, worked with photography, and made music.
The film leads us through tumultuous times to reveal a brilliant, influential artist and unpredictable man, whose work and life’s search for meaning continue to reverberate into the 21st century.
