NOTE: I also have a short version (15 minutes) of this film of you are interested!
The world is in a cross fire between two opposites: Islamic radicalism and Islamophobia. The coming of Islamic immigrants and the recent refugee crisis in Europe creates resistance. A question arises: what to do with all those Muslims?
Indonesia offers us an interesting perspective. The country has the world’s largest Muslim population which lives together with five other official state religions. Indonesia was a global example of moderate Islam, but lost its credibility by prosecuting the Christian governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok). Fundamentalism is growing; not only on the streets but in politics as well. This is of course grist to the mill of the Islamophobes.
The Indonesians believe to have found a solution for this situation. An idea called Islam Nusantara emphasizes that Islam is adaptable to any kind of culture, and should eliminate radicalism and extremism. Acculturation, national unity and tolerance play a key role. NU has international ambitions and believes that Islam Nusantara can help the world with promoting a moderate Islam. Realistic or too good to be true?
Nusantara explores two questions: is Islam compatible with Western society? And what can we learn from Indonesia?
