Information for the Audience:
Filmed in Highland Park, NE LA (mainly on the iconic 58th street stairs between Figueroa and Benner St), it is fitting that ‘Now What?’ is having its premiere at the Highland Park Film Festival this October. The short is a third in a loose trilogy penned by actor/writer Nick Maccarone, now based in Oakland, CA. The second in the series, ‘Communication’ is shortly to have its premiere at the Williamsburg International Film Festival in September. Diversity is central to the team, both in front and behind the camera.
'Now What?' was born out of a conversation Nick and I had about the theme for the third film in our trilogy. I suggested he focus on the theme of work, and center it around his own personal quest to work out his vocation and the doubts he was wrestling with over his career as an actor. Nick seized on the idea and began to draft the script for him and actor J.S. Davall, a longtime collaborator of mine. The script went through various iterations as we brainstormed around areas of identity, race, vocation and friendship.
Starring Nick & J.S. Davall, the resulting film is an ode to male friendship that follows Nick through a dark night of the soul as he questions the next stage of his life with his longtime friend, Jamel. Weaving music from renowned jazz pianist Rod Williams in and out of the narrative, the short begins as Nick sits alone, Pasadena’s City Hall flickering in the background. He calls his friend, Jamel, and makes his way over to Highland Park to hang out and talk into the night. Serious questions of identity, race and vocation are raised and hashed out that are highly topical, particularly in light of the Hollywood diversity debate this last year; but old stories and laughter are also shared as the two friends reminisce and reunite. As UK composer Stephen Hiscock put it, “There’s a lot of meat in that 10 minutes!”
