Moment of Clarity

Synopsis:

“Moment of Clarity” is about not following through on epiphanies. David knows what he should do, but falls back on old habits because they are familiar and require less effort. The film, roughly 24 minutes in length, also delves into the waking subconscious as David’s thoughts fluctuate between flashbacks and wild fantasy. Drawing from stream-of-conscious works from the likes of Virginia Woolf, William Faulkner and Samuel Beckett (Malone Dies in particular), this is my first attempt at replicating human thought in cinematic form. It has a surrealist and impressionistic bent with nods to Luis Bunuel, David Lynch, Billy Wilder, Fellini, Shohei Imamura, Stanley Kubrick et al. This film is first part of two semi-autobiographical projects planned—the second being my first feature film—that will involve the same main character.David is a college grad who lives with his mother and has no friends, no job and a resentful relationship with his ex-girlfriend Angie. He also suffers from severe depression and anxiety and is abusing alcohol in an attempt to deal with his current predicament. He sees both a psychiatrist and a psychologist to work out these issues, but lies to them about his drinking.I worked meticulously on the storyboards which consist of 141 images and 152 shots (this can be found on my LinkedIn page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danejordanbaumgartner) to encompass camera movement, lighting, blocking, composition, art direction, wardrobe and locations.
