The film explores the relationship between Maria Martins’ life and art (1894-1973), now recognized as one of the greatest Brazilian sculptors, and her etchings and texts. The cinematographic treatment reveals a new organic monumentality in her work and her boldness in dealing directly with a female vision of sexuality whose transgression was one of the causes for the attacks from the Brazilian critics. At the same time, the film redeems her life as the wife of one of the most important Brazilian diplomats and her love affair with Marcel Duchamp. It shows the depth of this relationship and mutual cooperation between the two artists, as evidenced by Duchamp’s letters over twenty years. Maria Martins was also fundamental to modern Brazilian art as curator. Their collaboration was essential for the establishment of the Modern Art Museum collection in Rio de Janeiro, the first three Biennales of Sao Paulo.
