After decades of communism young independent artists in Havana, Cuba are eager to share their visions and stories through the medium of film. But with only a centralized, state-run film institute legally funding film production, many must seek other ways to produce their art. This is a challenge as these filmmakers do not yet have legal standing as independent producers from within Cuba. Whether it's studying their craft at the country's International Film School (EICTV) or learning on the streets from big name Cuban filmmakers who began to pave the way in the late 90s, these young filmmakers are exploring contemporary themes in their work from an acutely unique perspective on the Island. Por amor al arte follows the experiences of five young directors in Havana working outside of the centralized, state-run Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC). In the wake of Cuba's recent foreign policy relaxations, we look at how young independent filmmakers negotiate the complexities of a nation in transition and the possibilities of staying in Cuba to produce their films.
