Udayakantha Warnasuriya's Joyful journeys(Madhura Charika) is a poignant story about Wilson Godamanne, an 85-year old former film actor, who lives with his son, daughter in law and two grandchildren in the picturesque hill country of Sri Lanka.
The film accurately captures the everyday manners of its ordinary folk set within the rich green coiffured canopy of tea covering Sri Lanka's hill country Nostalgically reaching out for a taste, once again,of the sweet intoxication of his former glory,Wilson decides to attend a state film festival showing a film he had acted in a long time ago.Accompanied by his 8 year old grandson,Wilson arrives too late to attend the opening ceremony, but in time to see himself on the silver screen once again. On his way to catch his bus,he is stricken fatally by a heart attack. With only a helpless child at hand,Wilson experiences the compassion of strangers and friends at his time of crisis. The film leaves behind a lasting impression of the need of humans to find value in themselves especially as the light of life begins to fade.
