An American theater director, Jason, directing The Seagull at a National Theater in Romania forges a friendship with his leading actress, Aniko, and her young son, David. Jason returns to Los Angeles and is swept up into a dream film project and a romance with its young star, Zoe. When both the film and relationship crash to the ground, thanks to a transgression on Jason's part, he returns to Romania to lead a workshop at the National theater, blessedly unaware of his woes. With David silhouetted against a sunset over Bucharest, Aniko and Jason share a kiss, a longing to escape for her, an act of restoration for him. She and David come to live with Jason in Los Angeles. Jason assumes the role of father more easily than Aniko finds work. She is dogged by the most crippling of cultural dislocations for an actor: no one can understand what she's saying. When Aniko's frustrations spill over onto Jason, Zoe's reappearance in Jason's office, at the community college where he teaches, provides an irresistible temptation. Zoe and Jason have sex on his metal desk that night and several nights after. When Zoe comes to Jason's house and David catches them having sex in the garage, Jason runs headlong into the language-barrier. He must communicate to David--who speaks no English--the importance of keeping all this a secret. How surprising then when David, over dinner that night, blurts out, 'Today I see Jason and girl and he makes 'Oh Oh Oh' and she makes 'Uh huh Uh huh.'
