Long before the era of Donald Trump, deep in the mists of mythology and history, lived brash and egotistical leader. This is his story.Loosely based upon several ancient Mesopotamian epics, “Gilgamesh in Love” tells the story of the hero whose friendship with his sworn companion Enkidu is broken when he attracts the attention of the goddess Inanna. She takes him to her heavenly palace as her lover.Despite her loving ministrations, he becomes bored and seeks to return to earth. Inanna is ashamed and angry and with the other gods plots her revenge. It backfires comically. When Gilgamesh arrives home, he finds that, to punish him, angry gods have taken the life of his friend.Distraught with guilt, he wanders the world. Inanna's anger is abated. In disguise, she watches over him as he searches for meaning. He descends to the underworld where he actually does encounter Enkidu who answers some of his questions. However, Gilgamesh also finds himself trapped in the underworld.In order to win back his love, Inanna rescues him, by ritually bargaining with her sister, the goddess of death. He still refuses to be her consort, though, until she makes the great sacrifice required to demonstrate her love.
