A young black doctor travels to a remote town in the middle of the Ozark Mountains. Summoned by his uncle Matthew, Norfork’s unofficial leader, he is to fill the newly opened position of town’s physician. Norfork is special, quaint yet eerie. It’s 1866, a postbellum world, but race has never been an issue in this self policed state. Doc will question ethics and his own principles in order to keep such an idealistic lifestyle in this utopian town. The illusory existence is due to the mythical beasts that patrol the wooded borders, keeping code and dispensing justice. Their law does not come without consequence and many have lost their limbs, lives and family members due to their unwavering order. Doc befriends brother and sister, Annie and William, townsfolk whose father was taken by the ghosts over 20 years ago. Doc must choose where his allegiances lie when the time comes for a revolt lead by Annie. Will he bow down to the powers at be to continue living in this paradise, or will he work to uncover the secrets of what really patrols beyond the borders?
