Fathering Me:The Long Walk Home

Synopsis:

Fathering Me: The Long Walk Home is about is about the development trajectory many men must take who grow up without their own father or some other positive male role model. It highlights the parallel process of men learning how to father themselves at the same time they are learning how to appropriately respond to their children's needs. It tells the story of the challenges many men face embracing and responding to the fatherhood role when they have experienced compromised parenting in the past. It highlights not only the struggle but also the triumph and how important it is for men to receive supports that are in many respects equal to the support provided to women in order for them to be successful in their role. The film provides examples of fathers in a variety of lights, some who are doing well and others who are challenged and incapable of responding to the challenge. In some respects the film also illustrates how growing up in compromised parenting situations influence behaviors and decisions of children. Paternal presence is so significant when the father his attuned, healthy, committed and willing to learn. Maternal presence is significant for all of the same reasons. This film will make you laugh and it will make you cry. Viewers will walk away with a lot of questions but so much more insight into why men often times behave the way that they do.
