“There’s no other place in Tunisia or in the Arab world like the North Star Theatre”. This is how Noureddine El Ati, director and founder of the theater, describes one of the most culturally vibrant projects to have come to light in Tunis in the last 20 years.Housed in a renovated old parking lot almost 20 years ago and renovated with futuristic architecture, this is the sizable space in the heart of Tunis where the company sets up its shows, strictly free of charge. It’s here, in this place “aligned to the revolution”, that during the uprisings against dictator Ben Ali activists and intellectuals gathered to devise slogans and organize protests. And again it’s here that even during the month of Ramadan, artists of all kinds come to fill the theatre’s bar to freely discuss, eat and drink. The documentary contains a story within a story. The first is the performance of the theatrical piece “Zerline', taken from a book by Austrian author H. Broch and performed in Arabic. Through the opening of ancient Tunisian doorways the camera steps outside, meeting actors, writers and artists who deal with various themes; they tell their version of the Arab spring, and speak of a 'betrayed' and 'seized' revolution.Another door leads us to jihadist terrorism that is rocking Tunisia. Beyond artists’ point of view about jihadism, this chapter includes images of Sousse’s beach, just a few hours after the terrorist attack. And finally the Tunisian women; determined to defend their rights.
