Ankahee Baatein

Synopsis:
Love is the most sought after feelings of our times, it is one of the most fragile relationship in today’s time because it is the most over looked one. In a city which is always in a rush, people tend to forget that somewhere someone is waiting for them , is thinking of them or is expecting a simple text message. And when that person feels unloved, he or she tends seek it out somewhere else. It is between these gaps that heartbreaks happen and people drift apart. This is what happened with Asmita and Sudhir. Asmita  is a 32 year old successful play writer and director. One day while helping her friend out in the night she meets Sudhir, her 38 year old ex husband and from there starts the journey of so many unsaid answers between the two.  Both have an option of leaving at any point of time. But that night they decide to face the undercurrent questions and dilemmas both have been facing for so long. They are breaking the silence they have been holding on to for so long after their divorce.  None of them is right, none of them is wrong, it’s just that the words lost their meaning to the time and both of them became vulnerable to their own insecurities. Asmita started seeking out Sudhir in someone else and Sudhir got busy in his work and forgot about the relationship. Probably  Sudhir didn’t have the strength to make it work, probably Asmita she was tired of waiting for Sudhir. Or both of them became to afraid to say their heart out to each other. What will this night be to them, a reunion or a happy goodbye?

Director Statement -

Stories on relationships have always fascinated me. And most of the short films that I have directed have been on the complexities of a relationship.

While living in Mumbai and London as a student and travelling to places like New York, Paris,Edinburgh and Delhi, I realized that majority of people have a broken up relationship in past or are going through one. The main reason behind the break ups and divorces had always been lack of communication and lack of expressing love. As everyone gets so busy in their daily life that somewhere they stop taking care of their relationships, career and money and materialistic things take priorities. We take relationships for granted and in process we loose someone whom we love the most. For some being in relationship, and not getting the attention, not getting love and being one sided they start looking for love somewhere else. Any big city is a challenge to live in as life is very competitive and very fast moving, and while we try to catch up to its pace, we loose on the time that we should have given to that someone special.

When the story of 'Ankahee Baatein' (Unspoken Conversation) came to me, I got immediately attracted to it and decided to make it as my next short film. The story takes place over a night when a divorced couple Asmita and Sudhir come face to face after a long time as they coincidentally come to help their common friend Tanya. While walking back home Sudhir and Asmita start talking to each other and out comes feelings, grudges and emotions which they had restrained for so long. What attracted me in the story was that it was not one person to be blamed but both of them in their own ways drifted away from their relationship, the grey area's of a relationship which we all restrain from saying out loud. They both being totally honest and baring it all out in front of each other, makes the crux of the story and in the process of this conversation they give each other a kind of closure.

For me that was the most beautiful part of the film. Many times in life we have grudges against each other, complaints and problems, but we never tend to confront and know the story from the other side, the reason behind it, this film explores that aspect of our life. The simple fact that we fail to listen to each other.
