The story of a friendship that goes beyond differences.
1990, suburbs of Rome, Italy. Marlene, eleven years old, is about to start Middle School. She discovers from a friend that a gypsy boy will be her classmate and she asks her father, Dario, to move her to another school. No way. Dario is too busy to listen to her and is indifferent to her request. Marlene, then, starts Middle School with her old group of friends from Elementary School: Claudia, Davide and Lorenzo. Apart from Claudia, all the kids consider Zoran, the gypsy boy, as an enemy and an unjust “punishment” in their life. Marlene just hates Zoran before knowing him. Their two worlds seem destined to never meet. She lives in a middle-class house, with her own comfortable room and a computer she won at a poetry competition. Zoran lives in an old caravan at the gypsy camp La Martora and wears clothes he finds on the grounds of the caravan site; he does not even know what a wardrobe is. Marlene loves to swim and considers water as her natural environment, a perfect universe, the only one she feels peaceful and confident in. Zoran is dirty and considers water as a rare commodity, because in the gypsy camp they have no bathrooms and just a little fountain to serve over 200 people. Marlene is a good student, while to Zoran it seems an impossible goal to achieve a Middle School Diploma. However the young girl discovers that a friendship can also arise from common enemies they both have to fight: the three bullies of the class and a cruel teacher. Marlene then gives Zoran an opportunity to talk with her and she discovers having something in common with that gypsy boy she hated so much. They are both rebel, dreamers… Marlene would like to be a film director and Zoran would like to be a doctor but both their dreams seem strange to society, in the reality they live in. And they both suffered loss, despite their young age. From the clash and the meeting of their two different worlds, a sincere and pure friendship born, grow and evolve. A new little universe affected by different habits… They will change deep inside but will they be able to change the reality around them?
