Randy Van Dyke and David Edmundson have lent their talents to countless feature films since their Writing/Directing debut PINK LEMONADE. That movie enjoyed success rarely seen by first time filmmakers; worldwide distribution. With Non-Stop to Comic-Con they set out to make the ultimate road trip film for geeks, by geeks. David and Randy don't just talk the talk though. The two are primary editors for the website geeklegacy.com. The site has been covering San Diego Comic-Con for the last 5 years as members of the accredited press. The two co-host a weekly podcast for the site with approximately 5,000 weekly downloads, and run the site's content of over 200 posts per month. They know the geek culture inside and out.
Director’s Statement
This movie is a love letter to geeks, and the social events like Comic-Con that bring them together. Like the characters in Non-Stop to Comic-Con, we have been geeks and fanboys all our lives; since well before mainstream media (like The Big Bang Theory) made it popular and socially acceptable. It has been a long road, and it is one we are proud to have traveled.
The journey in this film is no different. All of our characters have their own specific reasons for wanting to go to the superbowl of geek, but one common thread binds them all together: acceptance. They want to go someplace where they will fit in, and be among people with common interests and passions. There are no outsiders at Comic-Con! Geeks, Nerds, and Superfans of every age and background congregate to celebrate.
To make things interesting, and uncomfortable at times, we wanted our heroes to team up with an unlikely ally on the plane: a troupe of adult filmmakers. We avoided portraying them as stereotypical caricatures, and instead focused on their similarities with the geeks. Both groups are misunderstood when taken at face-value, and outcast by society. By putting aside their differences and stepping outside their comfort zone, they are able to save a plane full of people from a potential calamity.
Part of this calamity comes in the form of an anti-geek religious group called “The Church of Blood”. This religious group was inspired by an actual mob of protestors picketing the streets around the convention center during San Diego Comic-Con, and other conventions and pop culture events. We shot the majority of the protest footage used in the movie at San Diego Comic-Con.
Making this movie was two weeks of intense chaos with a largely untested crew. Our Producer, Charles Myers runs the Cinema department at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo California. His current and former students comprised more than 90% of the crew responsible for making Non-Stop to Comic-Con a reality. Principle photography was a brisk fourteen days, and was shot during winter break between the fall and spring semester so it wouldn’t interfere with classwork. Every project is a learning experience, and it was wonderful to be able to share that opportunity with so many eager film students.
