France, 2011: The government issues licenses for shale gas exploration in a series of backroom deals. The country erupts in a wave of protest which stirs up the whole of Europe. The scale of the protest is a setback for the oil industry - France becomes the first country to ban hydraulic fracturing. A power struggle sets in as the industry retaliates. Even as opponents of fracking try to move the debate on to the transition to sustainable energy, the government aims to review the ban, under heavy pressure from industry lobbyists.
