Guppy

Synopsis:

Vlad Furman’s film “Guppy” is based on a play by the world-famous playwright Vassiliy Sigarev, the winner of the London Evening Standarts Award as “Most Promising Playwright”. The award was handed to him by Tom Stoppard who excitedly compared him to Dostoyevsky. So, what or who is “Guppy”?Guppy is a little aquarium fish able to survive in any conditions, even in the sewerage. “Guppy” is also the nickname of the film’s main character Tamara given to her by her husband. The basic plot of the play is somewhat a vaudeville. Him, Her, and the Husband – a classical love triangle. However, the author defines its genre as “maybe comedy, maybe tragedy”. Following Tom Stoppard’s comparison, the director of the film Vlad Furman compares this play to Dostoyevsky’s novella “A Gentle Creature” (also translated as “The Meek One), as a story about a woman’s unfortunate life and love driven by phenomenal characteristic of self-contempt.
