The Cat in the Closet

Synopsis:

The Fan family was already not very versed at expressing love. After loss of their son Wei, they became more emotionally trapped. Soon, Lei-Ya, the mother, started to lavishly devote her time on feeding street cats. Qing, the daughter, moved out and rarely went home anymore. Yan-Ming the father pretended that nothing really happened, and treated everyone around him as nicely. Eight years on, the three members of this family, each bearing disappointment and anxiety, gathered up in their old place. The otherwise happy reunion escalated, and they must finally face the old sorrow and pain.

Director’s words:

The Cat in the Closet is adapted from a short novel of the same title by Taiwanese novelist An Shi-liu. While reading the novel, I was deeply touched by the protagonists’ sorrow, as well as their wishes to be understood. The affection between the story characters and the cats also reminded me of how sad I was when my pet cat died, because I was reluctant to let go. The wounds of my heart were healed, however, by the loving human-cat relationship in the story… This is why my team and I decided to visualize the novel. We hope the audience can be as profoundly touched as we did!
